Ruben Fleischer exploded onto the scene a couple years back with his hilarious take on zombie horror, Zombieland. After mostly positive reviews but a lackluster box office performance for his latest, 30 Minutes or Less, Fleischer is back behind the camera ready to bring a stronger showing with Gangster Squad.
Squad will follow Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin as LA cops in the 40s on the hunt for notorious mobster Mickey Cohen, played by the eternally sleepy Sean Penn. Fleischer is currently hard at work filming in LA, and the first set photos of Gosling and Emma Stone in costume have emerged over at MovieFone.
If there was ever a couple I would vote for to repopulate the Earth in the event of humanity’s near extinction, it would be these two. Ryan Gosling is the typical “women want him and men want to be him” fellow, and the same goes for Emma Stone, except, you know, the opposite. The images don’t show off any big drama, but it introduces us to the relationship between Gosling and the girl who gets between him and the investigation.
Gangster Squad is a veritable cornucopia of great actors who have been working hard and staying under the radar. Of course Gosling and Stone are getting a lot of attention, but the film also star Nick Nolte, Anthony Mackie, T1000 himself Robert Patrick, Giovanni Ribisi, and The Killing’s Emmy nominated Mireille Enos. Fleischer couldn’t have a better formula for success.
We won’t see Ganster Squad until 2013, but with any luck we’ll see some more set photos of the key players in the near future.
