Fourteen-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer’s suicide, brought on by years of bullying about his sexuality, saddened and outraged many people, including Rodemeyer’s idol Lady Gaga. The “You And I” singer was so deeply affected by the recent death of one of her little monsters that she’s hoping to meet with President Obama to stop bullying once and for all.
Rodemeyer posted his own “It Gets Better” video in May, and spoke adoringly of Gaga. “She makes me so happy,” he said. “She lets me know that I was born this way. And that’s my advice to you from her: You were born this way. All you have to do is hold your head up and you’ll go far.”
Unfortunately, the teasing was too much for Jamey, and he committed suicide this past Sunday. According to E! Online, Rodemeyer’s funeral will take place this Saturday, and his mother revealed that she plans to bury him wearing a Gaga t-shirt that reads “Born This Way”.
“The past days I’ve spent reflecting, crying, and yelling. I have so much anger. It is hard to feel love when cruelty takes someones life,” she wrote on her Twitter.
“Jamey Rodemeyer, 14 yrs old, took his life because of bullying. http://tinyurl.com/6e7n49s. Bullying must become be illegal. It is a hate crime… I am meeting with our President. I will not stop fighting. This must end. Our generation has the power to end it. Trend it #MakeALawForJamey.”
There’s no confirmation that Gaga has a definitive meeting with President Obama, though he will be attending the second annual Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention Summit in D.C. this week.
